Canberrans looking to boost their exercise routine without dipping into their wallets are getting a fresh reminder – dozens of free, open-air gyms and fitness circuits are available throughout the capital, with many upgraded or newly installed in recent years from Gungahlin to Tuggeranong.
It's a timely focus. Winter’s bite has settled in, but local health professionals at ACT Health say regular outdoor activity can reduce stress and bolster immunity during colder months. With gym memberships in Canberra’s major chains rising to an average of $72 per month according to market data from Finder, outdoor facilities are now more appealing than ever for cost-conscious residents. Plus, the social aspect of working out publicly is gaining traction as isolation and lethargy top local wellness concerns, according to a 2025 survey by Beyond Blue ACT.
The John Knight Memorial Park in Belconnen remains a perennial favourite. Nestled near Lake Ginninderra, its equipment circuit was refurbished last year and now features robust stations for chin-ups, dips, leg raises and agility ladders. Each setup is strategically placed along a 1.5km scenic path, popular with morning runners and lunchtime walking groups from the nearby University of Canberra campus. Over in Tuggeranong, the lakeside Active Leisure Promenade boasts Canberra’s flagship outdoor gym: a sprawling zone with plyometric boxes, fixed resistance wheels, and a calisthenics rig designed in collaboration with Exercise & Sports Science Australia. The area is floodlit until 10pm and sits on Bartlet Place, drawing families cycling along the edge of Lake Tuggeranong and Saturday’s parkrun crowd.
Other notable options include the fitness circuit at Yerrabi Pond in Gungahlin – favoured for its step-up stations and monkey bars – and the compact but busy gym at Glebe Park, Civic, which acts as a lunchtime fitness hub for office workers and ANU students. These spaces are all within easy reach of Red Rapid and Blue Rapid bus stops, meaning accessibility doesn’t require a car.
Data from the ACT Government shows that more than 180,000 visits were recorded at Canberra’s outdoor fitness facilities in 2025, up 24% on pre-pandemic levels. Demand has spurred the rollout of new equipment in suburbs like Moncrieff and Holder this year, expanding capacity on weekends. Notably, the ACT’s dedicated Parks and Places budget included $1.1 million in 2025/26 for outdoor recreation upgrades and maintenance. According to ACT Sports Minister’s May 2026 update, the uptake of free outdoor gyms has contributed to a 13% rise in adults completing the recommended 150 minutes of weekly physical activity, based on annual Active Canberra statistics.
Advocacy groups such as "Park Fitness Canberra" have also stepped in with free community sessions, and Beyond Blue ACT runs monthly ‘movement for mood’ meetups at Eddison Park, Woden – another location with circuit equipment and a gentle walking trail.
For newcomers, many sites include instructional signage and QR codes linking to video tutorials. Council staff recommend wearing gloves for metal bars and stretching well in the cold. For those using the gyms in low-light hours, Active Canberra advises sticking to well-lit paths and working out with a buddy for safety.
Plan ahead: the City Services directory updates gym locations and maintenance advisories weekly. Residents can also sign up for ACT Health’s "Active Streets" program to find local walking and fitness groups. Whether you’re chasing a pre-dawn push-up challenge or a social yoga circuit at sunset, Canberra’s open gyms are accessible, welcoming and cost nothing but your effort.
