Ljubljana Wellness Groups Test Phone-Free Hours That Stick
Ljubljana wellness groups are testing timed phone bans that fit daily routines without adding pressure.
How we reported this
Residents in Ljubljana began rolling out structured phone-free blocks this month, with groups reporting fewer stress-related complaints after just two weeks of consistent use.
Screen time has climbed steadily since 2023, when mobile data use in Slovenia rose 18 percent year over year according to national statistics. Workers and students now cite constant notifications as the main trigger for evening anxiety, prompting local wellness networks to test simple time restrictions instead of full-day bans.
Testing limits near the Ljubljanica
At the National and University Library on Turjaška Street, staff introduced a 90-minute evening window without devices starting 1 July. Participants leave phones at the front desk and use the quiet reading rooms for focused tasks. A parallel trial runs at the wellness studio on Miklošičeva Street, where instructors schedule 60-minute yoga sessions that begin only after all attendees store devices in locked lockers. Both locations draw from the same pool of 240 registered users who track adherence through a shared city app.
Evidence collected by the University of Ljubljana’s health psychology unit shows adults who maintain three phone-free hours daily report a 22 percent drop in self-rated stress scores after four weeks. The same study, published in May 2026, tracked 1,150 participants across the capital and found the largest gains occurred when the blocks aligned with existing habits such as the morning commute or post-dinner walks through Tivoli Park.
Building the habit without new apps
Participants start with one fixed block rather than multiple rules. They choose the hour after the 7 p.m. evening news on RTV Slovenija or the 30 minutes before the first tram at 5:12 a.m. on Slovenska Street. A printed card placed on the kitchen table serves as the only reminder. Those who miss a day simply resume the next scheduled block instead of restarting a streak.
Next month the same groups plan to expand the option to three additional neighbourhoods, with the first sessions scheduled for 12 August at community centres in Bežigrad and Šiška. Residents interested in joining can register in person at either library location or the Miklošičeva studio before 25 July.
