Ljubljana has 46 parks and green areas, covering over 26% of the city's surface, yet many visitors to the city rarely venture beyond the popular Prešeren Square and Triple Bridge area.
As the city's active wellness culture continues to grow, with over 70% of residents engaging in some form of outdoor activity at least once a week, it's no wonder that locals are keen to keep their favourite hidden nature walks under wraps. With the summer months in full swing, and temperatures often reaching over 28 degrees Celsius in July and August, these secret spots offer a tranquil escape from the city's bustling streets. The Ljubljana Tourism Board has reported a significant increase in visitors to the city's parks and green areas, with a 15% rise in the number of tourists visiting the Ljubljana Botanic Garden in the past year alone.
For those in the know, the Šmarna Gora hill, located just north of the city centre, offers breathtaking views of Ljubljana and is a popular spot for hiking and cycling. The nearby Rožnik hill, with its scenic walking trails and picturesque views of the Sava River, is another favourite among locals. The Ljubljana Forest, which covers over 4,700 hectares, is also home to numerous hidden nature walks, including the popular Golovec trail, which takes walkers through a stunning forest landscape and offers spectacular views of the city. The Slovenian Forestry Institute has reported that the Ljubljana Forest is home to over 1,000 species of plants and animals, making it a unique and fascinating destination for nature lovers.
According to data from the City of Ljubljana's Department of Environment, over 60% of the city's green areas are located within a 10-minute walk of the city centre. However, many of these areas remain undiscovered by tourists, with only 12% of visitors to the city reporting that they had visited a park or green area during their stay. The city's outdoor fitness programme, which includes free fitness classes in several of the city's parks, has proven to be a huge success, with over 5,000 participants in the past year alone. The programme, which is run in partnership with the Slovenian Athletic Federation, offers classes in parks such as Tivoli, Koseze, and Mostec, and costs just €20 per month for residents.
For those looking to explore Ljubljana's hidden nature walks, the city's tourist information centre offers a range of free maps and guides, including the popular 'Ljubljana Green Guide', which highlights many of the city's lesser-known parks and green areas. The guide, which is available in English, German, and Italian, can be downloaded from the city's website, or picked up at the tourist information centre on Stritarjeva street. With its stunning natural beauty, and wide range of outdoor activities on offer, Ljubljana is the perfect destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you're a local or just visiting, be sure to get off the beaten track and discover the city's hidden gems for yourself.
